Alby wasn't planned. One weekend, I simply had the thought, I want to paint a magpie.
Unbeknownst to me, around the same time someone who had bought one of my paintings was asking if I ever painted magpies. Then, as soon as I shared that Alby was underway, another person asked if he was available. Apparently, magpies were having their say.
The reference came from Albany photographer Matt Laughton, and a trip to Western Australia later added another piece to Alby's story. I discovered that Australian Magpies aren't quite the same across the country. In south-west WA, males have striking white backs, while the magpies I know from the east coast have very different markings — populations separated over time by Australia's vast, arid interior.
I thought I was simply painting a magpie.
Turns out there was a little more to Alby.
